From Round-up to Rocks

We started last week with a fun Round-Up.  For those of you who are not familiar with Round-Up, it's just our school's name for a whole school assembly that we have on the last Monday of the month.  We usually have a grade level performing or a group like our Colt Chorale performing.  And on Halloween night the cutest little first grade pumpkins were ringing my doorbell...

Last week in Math, we began Unit 3 which is on word problems, addition and subtraction, counting sets of objects, and finding multiple combinations of a number.  In Science, we continued our study of rocks.  In Social Studies we emphasized the character trait, responsibility by learining about Clara Barton and Eleanor Roosevelt.  We did a lesson that integrated math and science called "Spinning Ghosts." The students had to predict which paper ghost would spin and we graphed their predictions.  Then they got to make a spinning ghost of their own and we learned how the air pushing against the arms forced our ghosts to spin.

On a more personal note, I took a tumble of my own.  I tripped while walking to my car and dislocated a couple of fingers and banged myself up a bit.  I just thought I'd let you know in case you heard anything from your child. I missed half of today and I will miss half of next Monday to go to the hand doctor.  Today's sub told me that the kids did a great job!

The Vivace singers from CHS sang The Star Spangled Banner and performed Thriller at Round-Up

Amav was chosen to participate in the Bat Fact Game at Round-Up
 Testing our spinning ghosts...

Dot Addition..We tried to find combinations of dot cards that would add up to a certain number.  Thhen we recorded our combinations on paper.

After reading Everybody Needs a Rock, we brought rocks from home. We washed them and sorted them by attributes in table groups.  We then filled out a chart about our rocks telling about their color, luster, hardness and what made our rocks special.
